ABC Calls Out Slut Shaming #Bachelorette Tweets

.

In a tense and emotional moment, Bachelor host Chris Harrison read out tweets and emails demeaning contestant Kaitlyn Bristow during the “Tell All” episode, making a statement about slut shaming.

Harrison read out loud tweets and an strongly worded email calling Bristow a “slut,” “whore,” and telling her to “close your legs.” Audience were visibly upset and Bristow cried as the messages were revealed.

Harrison acknowledged the emotions but made no apology for addressing the controversial notes. “That was something that needed to done,” he told the audience.

He chastised the authors of those hurtful messages saying he’d prefer Bristow as a role model to his children over those condemning her on cyberspace.

The shaming tweets were largely in response to Bristow’s decision to sleep with one of her suitors, Nick Viall, during the show. She expressed regret for having let things go too far. But that did not stop some viewers from verbally attacking her character.

One horrifying tweet read “Kaitlyn is a selfish whore with no morals and a pathetic excuse for a human being!! She should just crawl in a hole and die. I hope fans break her spirit so our kids can see that whoring behavior isn’t rewarded.”

A tearful Bristow said she had even received death threats.  The Canadian dance instructor told Harrison she could tolerate the hate aimed her way, but couldn’t bare the thought of her family reading the messages.

“They call me to see if I’m OK and I was like don’t read it … it’s hard, it’s hurtful,” she told Harrison.

The violently-worded messages also took its tole on the Bachelorette men. Many of the men gasped as Bristow revealed the details of her ordeal. Ian, who accused Bristow of only wanting to “make out with dudes on TV,”  got down on his knees and apologized.

One episode of Bachelorette is left and Bristow will soon pick with whom she wants spend her life, Nick or Shaw Booth. Let’s hope that Harrison’s bold move calms all the name-calling online.
